7 Chinese held by kidnappers

Seven Chinese nationals working for a private fishing company were kidnapped off the Bakassi peninsula in southwest Cameroon, the Chinese Embassy in Cameroon confirmed on Saturday.

A group calling itself the "Africa Marine Commando" has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, which occurred on Friday morning, the embassy said, adding it was doing its best to rescue the captives. So far, a spokesman said, the lives of the seven Chinese were not in danger.

Miliband trip from Shanghai

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband will kick off his official China visit on Monday. He is scheduled to hold a series of talks with senior Chinese leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao, State Councilor Dai Bingguo and his counterpart Yang Jiechi. Miliband is to make a speech on the global economy on Monday in Shanghai, where he will also visit the UK's pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, which opens May 1.

Strong quake rattles Tokyo

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 jolted northern Japan on Sunday, seismologists said, shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo some 240 km away. There were no reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.
