China Daily | Updated: 2008-11-29 08:02

The "Ashtray Award" given to China aims to encourage the country to make more efforts to control smoking, says an article in Beijing News. The following is an excerpt:

China was recently presented with the "Ashtray Award" for its inability to control smoking at a recent World Health Organization convention in South Africa.

In fact, the winning of this award is not surprising. According to the latest statistics, China has the largest number smokers, 350 million and passive smokers exceeding 540 million. The number of teenage and female smokers has also been on the rise. The purpose of the "Ashtray Award" is to prompt China to make more efforts to control smoking.
