NEW YORK: Lou Piniella was named the National League manager of the year on Wednesday after guiding the Chicago Cubs to the playoffs for a second straight year, even though the Cubs missed out on a World Series berth.
The 65-year-old received 15 first-place votes and 103 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
He beat out Charlie Manuel, who guided the Philadelphia Phillies to the World Series title.
