Technology transfer

China and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) yesterday opened a center in Beijing to promote South-South cooperation in industrial technology transfer. Tan Weiwen, director of UNIDO Center for South-South Industrial Cooperation (China) said the new organization aimed to work as a platform to help less developed countries benefit from China's expertise in infrastructure build up, agriculture and renewable energy exploration.

Pfizer college

Pfizer, a US-based leading pharmaceutical company, yesterday started a college in Beijing to conduct research on men's health in China. Pfizer in 2005 established a research and development center in Shanghai. The company has invested in total over $500 million to the Chinese market.

Pharma JV

WuXi PharmaTech, a leading pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device R&D outsourcing company in China, has announced that it will create a 50-50 joint venture with Covance Inc, one of the world's largest drug development services companies, in a bid to provide world-class preclinical contract research services in China. The proposed joint venture will be located in Suzhou. Covance would make an initial investment of approximately $30 million.

Carbon trading

The Shanxi Luliang Energy Emission Trading Center was officially launched in Beijing on July 19. With an aim to influence and increase the domestic price of carbon credits, which is currently lower than the average on the international market, the center will set up a platform providing technical and financial support for energy-efficiency and emission-reduction projects under the Kyoto Protocol's clean development mechanism.
