Updated: 2008-07-24 07:36 Strong quake hits north A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 jolted northern Japan early this morning local time, but there was no threat of a tsunami from the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The focus of the tremor was 120 km below the surface of the earth in Iwate prefecture.
