Rainstorms kill 8

Rainstorms over the past few days have killed eight people and affected more than 500,000 others in Hubei province.

The wet weather continued yesterday in the eastern and southern parts of Hubei, as the cities of Qianjiang and Tianmen reported precipitation of more than 50 mm within six hours, the Wuhan meteorological station in the provincial capital, said.

Among the dead, three were swept away by floods, two were struck by lightning and one died in a house collapse, provincial flood control authorities said.

Displacement concluded

Evacuation of residents and dismantling of buildings in the last displaced township in the Three Gorges reservoir area in central Hubei province finished on Tuesday, paving the way for a water-level rise.

The displacement of Gaoyang town in Xingshan county began in August 2004, bringing the total to 988 households in the township and rural areas, according to the local government.

Some 850,000 sq m of buildings were dismantled and refuse removal has also finished.

Completion of the displacement project in the Three Gorges reservoir has paved the way for a rise in water level from 156 m to 175 m.
