Rescue efforts continue

Chinese government is making an all-out effort to rescue a Chinese engineer who was kidnapped by unknown armed men in southern Afghanistan on Monday, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said yesterday.

The authority is paying close attention to the case and is doing its best to rescue the engineer, spokesman Liu Jianchao said.

The engineer and his Afghan driver were kidnapped in Wardak province in the south of Afghanistan on Monday.

The governor of Wardak said the engineer will be released soon, but refused to reveal more details.

Wen welcomes US aid

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao yesterday welcomed the US assistance to China's reconstruction work in the quake-hit region.

Wen made the remarks in a meeting with a joint delegation of the US government, business and rescue organizations, which was headed by administrator of Agency for International Development Henrietta Fore and Johnson & Johnson CEO William C. Weldon.

The delegation visited the Yingxiu town, one of the areas worst hit by the May 12 earthquake, to make preparation for the assistance work.

It is the first time for the US government to coordinate business and rescue organization to jointly assist China.

Jia meets LDP leader

Jia Qinglin, head of China's political advisory body, said yesterday the country would like to push forward relations with Japan in a long-term, healthy and steady manner.

The chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference met Nikai Toshihiro, chairman of the General Council of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

Jia said the successful visit by President Hu Jintao to Japan in May had opened up a new strategic mutually beneficial situation of relations. The joint declaration the leaders of the two countries signed had become the fourth political document guiding the development of bilateral relations.
