Roads reopen

Two expressways and 20 provincial highways in Guangdong province, which had been closed due to rainstorms, reopened to traffic yesterday, an official from the provincial transportation bureau said.

Between May 25 and June 18, 21 cities were inundated with heavy rains, which claimed 23 lives and caused 482 million yuan ($70 million) worth of damage, he said.

Fifty-six bridges, two expressways and 20 provincial highways stretching almost 1,300 km were badly damaged, he said.

Emirates links Guangzhou

Dubai-based Emirates Airline yesterday launched a new direct service between Guangzhou and Dubai, making the city its fourth destination in China.

The service will initially operate every day except Friday, but will be extended to seven days a week from Oct 1, the airline said.
