Rural economies thriving

Among China's 2,100 counties, 168 reported their total income in 1982 to have been over 100 millions yuan, the Ministry of Agriculture, Stocks and Fishery Industry said.

Only 132 counties reached this level in 1981. The national income on cooperate businesses, including service business and other industries, was 77.18 billion yuan in 1982, which is 15 percent higher than in 1981. It provides 30 million jobs in 1.33 million rural corporations.

For Jiangsu province, there are 38 counties that have reached 100 million in 1982, which earns Jiangsu the first place among provinces.

Newspapers and magazines grow in China

One out of every 10 Chinese buys a newspaper, and one in every five buys either a newspaper or a magazine, according to the Director-general of posts under the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.

In 1949, 300 Chinese people held only one copy of newspaper, and one in 40 people in 1957.

More than 2,700 newspapers and magazines are published in China, and more than 40 percent are sold by subscriptions.
