The man took drugs in 2002 when he was a university student in Shanghai. His drug use proved problematic, and he had to take a break from his studies to enroll in a detox program. After successfully completing the program, the man launched the website www.xfdjw.com to share his story with the public. (Chongqing Morning News) Poisoned worker asks for compensation Li Yaxi, a 36-year-old resident of Chongqing municipality, worked for 13 years for a company that produced foam. Eventually, he became ill due to exposure to benzene in the manufacturing process. Last year, he was diagnosed as suffering from "occupational chronic benzene poisoning." Treatment for his illness will be expensive. "I cannot bear the treatment cost which will be more than 20,000 yuan ($2,900) every year," Li said. He has sued the company for a compensation payment of 1.036 million yuan ($150,000), the total anticipated cost of medical treatment over 30 years. A local court will hold a hearing on the case soon. (Chongqing Times) Elderly woman makes dramatic life change Li Fengzhi, a 60-year-old resident of Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, has turned over a new leaf, after 40 years of drug addiction. Li first tried opium in 1968 when she visited a relative. Over the next four decades, her drug habit grew more costly and dangerous. On Feb 19, Li was released from a local drug rehabilitation center. She had at last kicked the habit, but she had no home to go to. Sun Jianhua, a local police officer, helped Li register for a living allowance and begin working again. (Metropolis Times) Yunnan park will house pandas from Sichuan Yunnan Wildlife Park will become the temporary home for three giant pandas from Sichuan province. The pandas will arrive in late June and remain in the Yunnan park for two years. The Sichuan Wolong Giant Panda Research Center was badly damaged during the May 12 earthquake. Fourteen of the 32 panda houses collapsed. "We decided to receive three pandas for two years of feeding in our zoo and we will cover all the cost of transportation and feeding," said Ding Yefeng, deputy manager of Yunnan Wildlife Park. (Chongqing Evening News) Narcotics burnt without noxious fumes Police in Chongqing municipality have begun using a new method of disposing of illegal narcotics seized by authorities. "We used to burn drugs openly, and the smoke caused atmospheric pollution," said Wang Yunsheng, deputy director of Chongqing public security bureau. On Sunday, however, the department burned a large haul of drugs, more than 600 kg, in an enclosed incinerator belonging to a Chongqing iron and steel plant. Temperatures reaching 1,200 degrees centigrade instantly melted the drugs.
