Restaurant blaze kills 4

Four boys were killed when the kitchen of a noodle restaurant in Tongzhou district, caught fire on Sunday, Beijing News reported yesterday.

All four were working for the restaurant, the oldest of whom was 18.

The fire broke out at 3:40 am and quickly spread to the restaurant. It was put out 30 minutes later.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.

Suicide bid goes wrong

A woman surnamed Zhang of Chaoyang district has been detained, and is the first person to be accused of endangering public security by trying to commit suicide, Beijing Youth Daily reported yesterday.

Initial investigations show that Zhang tried to commit suicide after quarreling with her boyfriend. She turned on a gas stove in her home last Tuesday. Police were notified and took the woman to hospital.

Talks on heart disease

The 3rd Sino-Italian Heart and Brain Forum was held jointly by the health ministries of China and Italy, and the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, in Beijing over the weekend.

The event served as an international platform to share insights into the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and to boost cooperation.

Medical fund set up

The China Children Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Prevention Fund was established yesterday in Beijing by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation and the US-based pharmaceutical and healthcare products supplier Wyeth.

The 15 million yuan ($2.2 million) fund will help the government to take proactive approaches to reduce diseases, especially affecting children.

Discussions on sensors

The 21st Congress of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing will be held in Beijing from Thursday to July 11.

During the period, more than 200 conferences, seminars and workshops will be held to discuss technologies and trends in the field.
