Dark-skinned and bare to the waist, his long hair flying, a man strikes fiercely on a one-m-long, black wooden drum painted with a bull head at either end. He stops after every two or three hits, stretches out his arms, and raising two club-shaped drumsticks in his hands, looks up at the sky.

I had never been to Hong Kong until early April. But this was not what prompted me to call several friends there before my departure. I told them that I was visiting but would only stay in Hong Kong for about two hours. I waited to hear their surprise and disappointment before I went on:
