Baby smugglers nabbed

A Vietnamese woman and a Chinese man accused of smuggling babies into the country from Vietnam have been detained, police said yesterday.

The woman was caught holding two infants as she tried to cross a river on the China-Vietnam border near the city of Dongxing in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Tuesday night. From her appearance, the woman was deemed not to be the babies' mother, a spokesman for Dongxing police said. After questioning, 53-year-old Pham from the Vietnamese city of Mong Cai in Quang Ninh Province confessed she had planned to sell the babies to a man surnamed Ruan from China's Guangdong Province, the spokesman said. Ruan was later arrested.
