BBC slashes its payroll

The head of the British Broadcasting Corp yesterday announced a radical overhaul of the media giant that will cut its workforce by 1,800, broadcast fewer programs and require staff to create content for television, radio and the Internet.

BBC Director-General Mark Thompson told staff that 2,500 jobs will be cut over the next six years, but that during that time 700 new jobs are expected to be created.
