A new variety of plastic bags has made its debut in Beijing. The new bags, which bear safety tips and suggestions on how to preserve the environment, are part of the country's latest efforts to ensure a green Olympics.

Beijing Evening News reported local chain-store brand, Wumei, started providing the new bags in its city outlets on Tuesday. They are priced between 0.2 yuan and 0.4 yuan depending on size.

The bags will be soon be introduced in other supermarkets such as Carrefour, Jingkelong and Chaoshifa.

China put an end to the ultra-thin plastic bags at the end of last year. The new bag is 0.03 millimeters thick in contrast to the national standard of 0.025 millimeters.

The government is urging the public to stop using plastic bags, and use those made of environment-friendly materials instead.
