Singapore in a fine state, no joke

One of the country's annual carnivals is Boat Asia, a regional high-end, luxury social event with music and fine cuisine normally held at the end of April. Last year's boat show was held at Sentosa Cove and this year it sailed into the marina at Keppel Bay, the first in Asia to receive "Clean Marina" certification.

It was imposing to see arrays of glitzy yachts, sailboats, catamarans and mega yachts docked there while world-class brands such as Ferretti, Grand Banks, Horizon, Princess, Sea Ray, Sunseeker and others dropped anchor on Singaporean shores this year.

I felt privileged to participate in the gala but very fortunate - and a little dizzy - to go tiptoeing across luxury, million-dollar boats like the sleek Princess 58 Flybridge (the 2007 Australian Boat of the Year), the Riviera SY4700 and this year's largest and most lavish eight-cabin yacht, the Ocean Yacht N95.

Where to stay in Singapore

There are as many hotels in Singapore as there are shopping malls - Ritz-Carlton Millenia, Raffles Hotel, Four Seasons, Shangri-La and many others.

The newly opened St Regis (29 Tanglin Road, Tel: 65 6506 6888) in the heart of the city in the Orchard Road area features many firsts for Singapore including the country's first ballroom boasting two large skylights, the first premium Remede Spa outside of the United States, and a fleet of customized Bentleys for transport.
