Affectedly trendy

Our dictionary defines the word 'chichi' as 'affectedly trendy', a description that aptly fits this bar of the same name located in one of Changning's flourishing neighborhoods.

An exterior signage of Curl MT fonts in a green and purple color scheme might suggest the venue is appealing to a female clientele and the interior's rainbow-colored room dividers and ornate chandeliers underline this cutesy approach. But while the design is engaging, the drinks are below par. The Chichi (RMB 35), a mixture of vodka, coconut, pineapple and Malibu, was both bitter and cloying.

Thankfully, a plentiful supply of beers (RMB 30-35) rescued our offended palates. With weekday evenings offering an open house to performers, ChiChi could be the place to spot the 'next big thing', even if it's unlikely to assume the title itself.
