Cheer Thai

(That's Beijing)

Fans of Vietnamese and Thai cuisine will rejoice at being able to order both green curry and pho at this homey neighborhood restaurant.

Like the food, the decor is simple and friendly: Elephants, Buddhas, and photos from both countries are scattered around the restaurant. The extensive menu features all the usual favorites of both cuisines, with the strong Thai spices complementing the more subtle Vietnamese flavors.

The papaya salad (RMB 40) was overwhelmingly spicy, but the cool sweetness of the rice noodles with crispy pork chop in lemongrass (RMB 30) was an enjoyable antidote. Stir-fried kale with salted fish (RMB 38) was pleasing to both the eyes and the palate, and we couldn’t get enough of the beautifully presented pineapple rice (RMB 48) with prawns, cashews, peas, carrots, and raisins. Large mugs of sweet Thai tea or Vietnamese coffee (both RMB 30) round out the meal perfectly.
