Americans have their diners, Brits have their pubs, but for French expats in Shanghai, eateries that serve casual, comfort-food are rare. This may be why La Creperie is such a welcomed and well-attended addition to the city's range of French options.

The owners are eager to educate newcomers about the nuances of Brittany's regional fare, and proudly offered us the Finisterienne (RMB 50), a buckwheat crepe with egg, chicken and spinach. Though this arrived slightly burnt, the Pierres Noires (RMB 75), with smoked ham, Camembert and mushrooms, was perfect. But we couldn't leave without trying a sweet crepe; flambeed tableside, La Jamaicaine (RMB 55) is a rum-and-banana delight, albeit one that was a tad too potent for some at the table.

Others, however, found it as pleasant as the cheerful waitstaff and the playful nautical decor.
