Fans of the long defunct mainland band The Dada have reason to celebrate: the band's frontman and principal composer Peng Tan has put out his first solo album, called Youth Story. He also has a concert scheduled for June 27 in Beijing, at which he'll be singing new songs.

The show will also include tracks co-written with former bandmate Wu Tao, so presumably there are no hard feelings about the recent split of the band.

The Dada came together in Central China's Wuhan, Hubei Province in 1996. Up until 1999, the group evolved several times before it stuck.

One member of the band once said, "We were eight people when the band was founded, like a big chorus. The band gradually became what it is today."

The Dada band, which broke up this May, is a rarely seen success story for the mainland.

The band gained fame from their 2000 single Happy Holiday, and after the release of their first album, Angel, in 2001, they began attending various pop award ceremonies. Critics considered them the "new band, new voice" as they gained more and more recognition.

In May 2000, The Dada began preparing for their first album. The songs they created were a mix of English rock 'n' roll, ballad rock 'n' roll, SKA with electrical music elements. Warner Music was so impressed with what they heard that they signed a contract with the band immediately. The Dada became the first band in China to sign with one of the five major labels in the music industry.

The Dada's songs reflected the new generation. They freely expressed themselves, worried about nothing and didn't pretend to be anyone else but themselves.
