Foot-tapping fiesta

A number of flamenco-related films will be screened to coincide with the Institute Cervantes' festival Flamenco for Everyone. Films will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.

Seville, Southside

June 22. Director: Dominique Abel.

Starring: Emilio Caracafe, Ramon Quilate, Luis de los Santos, Rafael Amador

Looking for the roots of the so called "New Flamenco" the documentary travels to all Tres Mil viviendas, the most problematic neighborhood of Seville, where the Triana's ancients gypsies are mixed with the new generations of musicians who found the most modern trends of the music with the deep roots of the traditional flamenco.

Under the honoring to a big artist and figure, named Pepe el Quemao, in a multitudinous concert for the first time locally, they show prominent figures of all styles and ages, who also speak about the daily problems, sing, dance, and show peculiar customs.

Los Tarantos

Starring: Carmen Amaya, Sara Lezana, Daniel Martin, Antonio Gades.

Each a member of feuding gypsy clans, two lovers decide to marry despite their impossible circumstances. This exotic version of Romeo and Juliet expertly utilizes the passionate music and dance of flamenco to unravel its tale of love and tragedy. With adept cinematography by Rafael Peres de Rozas, being a Best Foreign Film Oscar Nomination in 1963.

A Love Bewitched

June 29. Director: Carlos Saura.

Starring: Antonio Gades, Cristina Hoyos, Laura del Sol and Juan Antonio Jimenez.

The third film in Saura's flamenco dance trilogy, it opens with two drunken men arranging for the marriage of their children, Candela and Jose. Another boy, Carmelo, stands off to the side watching. Carmelo loves Candela, who loves Jose, who loves Lucia. After the wedding dances of Candela and Jose, Jose goes to the campfire to dance with Lucia. Enraged that Jose betrays his beloved Candela, Carmelo kills him with a knife in a tensely choreographed dance of death. Yet, upon returning after four years in prison, Carmelo finds that Candela is being haunted by the ghost of Jose.
