Those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of the stressful financial world could do a lot worse than retreating to the new spa in the Ritz-Carlton.

Occupying the entire basement floor of the hotel, the emphasis is on luxurious serenity. Customer service cannot be faulted - the staff is friendly and helpful, without being overbearing. The decor, described as "Chinese contemporary," is elegant, understated and stylish, if a little too cozy at times.

There is a pool, and a fitness suite that members and hotel residents can make use of, but most people visiting will be drawn to the treatments and spa services on offer. Facials are available from RMB 300, and other beauty services (such as bikini waxing for RMB 260) are also on offer. It is on the pricier end of the spectrum (massages from RMB 350/30mins and packages from RMB 1,200) but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Halla Mohieddeen
