One thing about Shanghai is that restaurant diners are spoiled for choice. As a result it is rare that a restaurant really, genuinely impresses. Creek Kitchen, however, is different.

Most people will be familiar with the building seen from the motorway as a piece of history against the intimidating backdrop of skyscrapers next to Suzhou Creek.

A building that is dedicated to the creative, Creek Art is a work of art in itself.

From the moment you step into the seven-story building from the late Qing dynasty, (the Rong family's well known former flour factory) you know you are somewhere truly unique. The restaurant on the sixth floor is divine.

"It is the living room of our creative home; we welcome every guest just like a friend who we've invited over. Nothing pretentious, providing simply what we believe to be the best casual, yet tasteful environment," explains David Xu, Creek Kitchen's general manager.

Established two years ago as a place of art and individuality, the building was forced to close for renovations shortly after. Newly opened in February it is still little known in Shanghai, but is a secret that needs to be told.

"We want people to know this place again, as many of those who used to come here don't know that we are open again," says Xu.

A top end restaurant with a family run feel, Creek Kitchen exudes something many of the best eateries in Shanghai lack, soul.

With a romantic ambience, candlelight against the breathtaking backdrop of Suzhou Creek and the skyline of Shanghai, by night, Creek Kitchen is definitely one of Shanghai's most beautiful restaurants.

Solid wooden floors compliment the antique carved tables where a single linen table cloth is draped elegantly.

The owners of Creek Art and Kitchen are a couple from Norway, Simon Yuen who has a lot of international experience in the restaurant industry and Lise Yuen who has the background in art. The result is a work of pure passion.
