The lion sleeps tonight

Having only eaten boerewors before, we really didn't know what to expect from Shanghai's only South African restaurant.

But at Chakalaka, this spicy sausage, is served skewered with mango (RMB 30). Bobotie (RMB 68), a slightly sweet and spicy dish of minced beef with sultanas and apricots under a baked custard, was satisfying. A lamb curry (RMB 72) looked unappetizing but was an original take on a curry. The food is largely quite tame on the game: Where is the ostrich and crocodile? Despite having South African wines the house wine is Australian (RMB 38/glass).

It is in a former factory, with a few paintings of Africa, in an area which has yet to catch on. Perfect for: homesick Africans.
