There's little wonder why Beijing's Central Business District (CBD) is always associated with terms like bustling, noisy, modern, global, but it also has quiet places where you can relax and unwind, such as the Rain Club.

The Rain Club is located in an old imperial warehouse dating to the Qing Dynasty (1644¨C1911), a one-level building near a new office high-rise. It serves an upscale crowd of business people who want a posh but not garish place to hobnob and entertain.

The old warehouse was renovated by a famous American design company, who gave the Rain Club a warm, sophisticated feel highlighted by the retention of heavy wooden elements of the building, which, if they could talk, would likely be able to tell thousand stories about the times they have endured. They are set off by the use of modern, cold, metal and glass materials that directly showcase their glamour, simplicity and convenience. Sitting beside a floor-to-ceiling glass wall, there are no obstacles in viewing and appreciating Ming (1368¨C1644) and Qing dynasty buildings that surround it. In a pool safely secreted under a glass staircase, goldfish symbolizing good luck swim fearlessly.

The first floor of Rain Club is comparatively quiet. With its soft piano music and a warm flame in the fireplace, you can open a bottle of Lafitte, light a cigar and talk to a couple of confidants at the club's 10-metre-long bar. The second floor, however, is more dynamic: here you can play American nine-ball billiards or Baby Feet to the tune of refreshing soul music.

Fusion cuisine is the featured dining fare at the Rain Club. Its cook has devoted many years to the study of the club's specialities along with innovative ways to harmoniously combine highlights in the main cuisines of Chinese food with elements of western dishes. Tuna fish and rose toaster and spinach and cheese chicken are among the club's most highly recommended dishes.

The Rain Club's cooks will also cook a meal tailor made to your desires, combining the flavours your prefer: you can even use vegetables you've picked yourself from the club's garden to order a one-of-a-kind dish made just for you.

Aside from delicately made a la carte dishes, there are also nutritious commercial set meals for business people who need to recharge themselves within a limited time.
