While Shanghai's newest elite nightspot makes a fine showing, it also flies in the face of branding logic: Indigo's decor is inexplicably black.

This is hardly a fault, however. Rich, almost voluptuous booths are set against jet black curtains and stately chandeliers; the result is a refined atmosphere in which to lounge and observe the beautiful people in their natural habitat. With house vocalist Gabriella covering tunes by Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and Diana Ross, intimate groups of customers might enjoy either casual conversations or the soulful show. The sizable crowd seemed to do both while sipping wine and Tsing Tao (RMB 58). We opted for Mojitos (RMB 75) which were as pleasant as the ever present wait staff. Indeed, both put us in a rare and relaxed mood.

Not mood indigo, but something far better.
