What sort of students do you see taking the classes?

We hope everyone
takes the classes! Local and foreign... young and old. People with no experience
at all and those who may possibly be better artists than us! You can always
learn something from everyone you meet... so we hope everyone can come in and
learn something, and even teach us something. Nicky has structured the classes
so that they suit beginner level students. We are also having short 1 day
workshops which will be marketed to different groups. For example, next weekend
is Easter so we are having a workshop for kids... painting Easter eggs, making
chocolate easter egg moulds and making baskets! Then later in the year we will
be running Photoshop and Illustrator classes targeting business' and their
employees.
We are open to suggestions as well...
Can you expand on the concept behind the Art Attack Class?
How does it work? Describe what would happen in a typical class.
Oh... Art
Attack class is going to be a tonne of fun!!! We are REALLY looking forward to
it!
So the idea behind art attack is that it's a casual way to learn and
grow as a creative. I'm leaving this open aren't I? Ok, Sunday afternoons... pay
150rmb for 2 hours (4-6pm) and you get a beer or soft drink and a sausage and
bread to munch on. We supply the paper and paint and teachers and you create...
make whatever mess you want! Each week will provide a direction to take but it's
more about having the time to be inspired and go crazy... we will be getting
guests in each week - graffiti artists, sculptors, photographers...
We know
how hard it can be to find time, space and inspiration to create... so that is
exactly what we are providing! And the best bit... you get to take your
creations home with you, or hang them in the space!!! It's up to you.
Where do you see The Studio fitting in with Shanghai's arts
scene?
We don't plan on fitting in... there is nothing like this
and we have no intention of categorizing ourselves as a certain art form. Within
the five founders we all have very different styles, we assume everyone else
involved will have different tastes and talents. We want to invite all art forms
in - and provide a space for everyone to display their work. We are not like a
gallery because we don't charge artists to display their work, we aren't an art
institute because we wonĄŻt be giving tests and we aren't an art festival because
we'll be open all year round!
What sorts of work/artists will be hung in the gallery
space?
Anything and everything. We want to hang our students work -
it's not easy getting a gallery to hang your work in Shanghai so we want to
offer this opportunity to students. We are also looking at getting international
artists over to use the space, teach and display their work. Again, we are a
mixed group - I prefer street art, Nicky prefers fine art and Jutta is very art
deco. So... everything and anything...
