Light on the stomach

Umekichi is a no-holds-barred mega Japanese restaurant. Set impressively over three spacious floors, it's decorated simply in light beige and the seating is quiet partitioned tables.

The service is friendly but be prepared for interruptions every two minutes from over eager servers wanting to clear away plates and re-fill tea cups. The restaurant does Japanese basics decently. The miso soup (RMB28) was everything it should be. The salmon sashmi (RMB128) was tasty, but the small portion made it suitable for only one person. For something more substantial try the fried pork with rice (RMB78) or buckwheat noodles with tempura (RMB78), both delicious and more generously served. If you're in the mood to splurge, try the mini-banquet (RMB498) or full-banquet (RMB988), definitely worth the money considering the cost and small quantities a la carte. Unfortunately for them, this restaurant does not offer anything out of the ordinary to recommend it against more reasonably priced competitors, such as Matsuko or Hatsune. The restaurant's lunch time set-menu options (from RMB50) will undoubtedly turn out to be the most satisfying for both your stomach and wallet.
