China's master pianist Lang Lang will perform with the London Symphony
Orchestra (LSO) in Beijing during the LSO's second visit to China on April 19
and 20.
The performances will take place as part of the LSO's Rolls Royce-backed Far
Eastern Tour. Joining Lang Lang, whose skills are gaining in respect worldwide,
in star billing are conductor Daniel Harding and violinist Frank Peter
Zimmermann.
The LSO, established in 1905, is one of the top five orchestras in the world
and the only British orchestra to hold an annual residency at the Lincoln Center
in New York. The orchestra's pioneering spirit was strong even in its early
years: it was the first British orchestra to travel abroad when it visited Paris
in 1906. Afterward, it became the first to visit the United States (1912),
Israel (1960) and Japan (1963). The LSO Live orchestral label is one of the best
known in the world and regularly ranks No. 1 on the classical downloads charts
on iTunes. Via recordings the Orchestra can reach a global audience of millions.
It played for films such as Star Wars: Revenge of the Sixth and Harry Potter and
the Goblet of Fire, and it is heard and seen via radio, television, the movies,
computer games, on planes, in elevators and just about anywhere where music can
be heard.
Harding is considered one of the brightest of a new generation of world-class
conductors. He became the youngest conductor at the BBC Promenade Concerts in
1996. Lang Lang was the first Chinese pianist engaged by the Berlin
Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and several top US orchestras. Violinist
Zimmermann's engagements, both orchestral and recital, have taken him to major
concert venues and international music festivals worldwide.
LSO's first visit to China in 2003 made a record high ticket office for 1.2
million yuan (US$150,000) for a single performance.
