The National Art Museum of China hosts an ambitious survey of American art,
featuring 130 works by 120 artists, ranging from the colonial to the
contemporary.
The exhibition is divided into six historical periods and, according to
curators, attempts to show how art "both reflected and contributed to a complex
visual narrative of the nation during times of discovery, growth, and
experimentation." Paintings include Benjamin West's "Penn's Treaty with the
Indians" (1771) and Charles Willson Peale's portrait of George Washington (c.
1780-82). You can also see the work of such greats as Gilbert Stuart, Georgia
O'Keeffe, Norman Rockwell and Jackson Pollock.
It should come as no surprise that a show with so many iconic works of art is
organised by two of the art world's most revered organisations: the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Foundation of New York and Chicago's Terra Foundation for American
Art. The Alcoa Foundation and Ford Motor Company are among the corporate
heavyweights footing the bill.
