What's up punk?Music fans will be getting read to rock around the clock soon when three of Beijing's best punk bands team up and take to the stage.

Re-TROS, Joyside and Subs, will perform at Star Live next Tuesday (February 6).

What links the guitar-twanging trio is Modern Sky, the largest independent record label in China.

The Indie label maintains the largest market share in the world as far as Chinese rock music is concerned. It produces music content from artists from a number of different music genres, among which punk plays a large part.

Founded in 2003, Re-TROS (Rebuilding the Rights of Statues) soon made a name for themselves in Beijing. The band see themselves as a return to a lost authenticity, wanting to embrace the basic values from the bygone post-punk era. Their music is a renewal of post-punk, which incorporated synthesizers and evocative melodies. Their debut album Ep Cut Off! was released in November 2005 and even included a guest performance by legendary music man Brian Eno, who used a synthesizer in three of the songs when he visited Beijing.

Joyside is another Beijing leading punk band. Their music is reminiscent of the 1970s UK punk scene. The old school scene even influences their name; Joyside comes from Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious of the seminal British punk band the Sex Pistols. The atmosphere is a mix of old and new. Their debut album, Drunk is Beautiful, was released in September 2003.

Formed in 2002, Subs is a Beijing punk band renowned for their high-energy live performances.
