For fickle clubbers

(That's Shanghai )

These days, launching a dance club in Shanghai is a risky business. Club owners are continually competing to attract customers while heads are turned by the next new thing.

One way to market a club is to give it a striking name and strong branding. Arriving at G Spot by elevator, you walk past a wall of vertical screens where dotted, multi-colored "g spot" logos speed up and down. Inside, a massive screen behind the DJ booth showers the audience with strong, bright colors. The crowd is a mix of Taiwanese and Hong Kong sophisticates blithely ordering over a thousand kuai in bottled drinks. We opted for the more modest Blue Curacao (RMB 38), a simple yet easy-to-drink sweet liqueur, and enjoyed the club's loud-pumping sound system. For fickle clubbers, G Spot's memorable look may be the secret of its success.
