Relaxed and satisfied

Carthage offers a predominantly Middle Eastern and North African menu at its convenient Sanlitun location.

While the decor may not be particularly enticing, the hearty fare will keep you coming back. Hummus (RMB 20) was lacking in garlic but the piping hot foul modammes (RMB 20) more than compensated with its rich, filling broadbeans and touch of lemon. The highlight of the meal was the vegetable couscous (RMB 40), which was light, fluffy and served with homemade harissa, a Tunisian hot sauce of smoked chili peppers and garlic, on the side. Portions were very generous, and the owner insisted that we take our time with the food as he regaled us with tidbits from Tunisian history. Polishing off our meal with mint tea (RMB 16) served the traditional Tunisian way with pine nuts in each glass, while passing around a shisha pipe (RMB 30), we felt utterly relaxed and satisfied.
