Cold Hearts: Painters from Leipzig
(economist.com) Updated: 2006-12-19 10:42 This exhibition showcases the contemporary fruits
of Leipzig, a German town perhaps better known as the birthplace of Johann
Sebastian Bach and Richard Wagner.
The paintings on display are by a
startling group of young artists from the "New Leipzig School", all of whom
graduated from Leipzig's Academy of Visual Arts in the 1990s. They paint in a
social-realist style that attempts to reflect post-cold war relationships
between art and politics, and isolation and globalisation.
The academy was established in 1764 to teach fine art, printing and book
design¡ªproper subjects for a city famous for its printing and publishing. This
tradition feeds into the work of the modern Leipzig painters, who combine
painting with new technologies, such as photography and computers.
