The anonymous stuntmen who risk their necks for superheroes will recreate breathtaking scenes from blockbusters such as "Spider-Man," the 007 series and "Men in Black" tomorrow, writes Xu Wei.

Stunt actors are truly unsung heroes, the real daredevils. People hardly ever get a glimpse of these men and women who take all the risks and perform the extraordinary acts for the superstars and the superheroes who take the credit and whose names are in lights.

But tomorrow at Zhabei Stadium, the curtain goes up for the city's movie buffs and everyone else as Hollywood's top stunt performers showcase their spectacular feats in high-speed pursuits, emergency braking and hands-off motorbike stunts - just as they do in the movies.

Following its successful show in Beijing in October, the famous Filmka stunt group will present a two-hour show in which actors will perform 36 movie stunts to the original soundtracks, plus fireworks and laser lighting.

Classic and breathtaking stunt action scenes once shown in Hollywood blockbusters such as "Spider-Man," the 007 series and "Men in Black," will be recreated in the live show.

The team has given more than 400 dazzling shows in about 30 countries and regions, says Antonin Hausknecht, head of the stunt team, who played some of Sean Connery's dangerous roles as James Bond. "We want to bring the Chinese audience a genuine feel for how Hollywood scenes are shot."

Hausknecht adds that though stuntmen are less familiar to fans than superstars, they have their own ambitions, welcome challenges and seek to surpass their own limitations.

Founded in 1961 and headquartered in Hollywood, the Filmka team has performed in leaps, crashes, high-octane racing and other death-defying feats. They have doubled not only for Connery but also for Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert DeNiro and many others. They have appeared in "True Lies," "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Taxi Driver."

Filmka's stuntmen have also won numerous awards, including the "World Stunts Awards," the top award handed out by the World Stunt Academy. It is the equivalent of the Oscars in the arena of stunts.

The team made its China debut at the Shanghai International Circuit in March. The unexpected success encouraged its members to tour around 20 Chinese cities in the next two years, including Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

"The visual effects in Hollywood mega-productions are terrific," says movie fan Qiu Zhonglin. "However, without the generous and risky support from these anonymous performers, they could not be that impressive and exciting.

"They all play indispensable roles in movie-making. The coming performance will not only offer a live experience here but also teach us to respect their endeavors."

Tickets: 188-588 yuan (Possible free tickets if you buy K-Swiss sports products, the show's sponsor) Tel: 021-5665-4333, 6288-6131
