Hong Kong's vocal powerhouse Eason Chan, whose songs "Ten Years" and
"King of Karaoke" have topped many mainland karaoke billboards, is often
compared to pop singer Jacky Cheung.
Because they lack matinee idol looks, both Chan and Cheung are considered
"skilled musicians" instead of "singing idols" in Hong Kong's pop music
industry.
Cheung has touched local fans with his impressive musical "Snow Wolf Lake,"
and next Saturday Chan will present a personal concert, his debut in Shanghai,
titled "Live in Shanghai."
Since last month, Chan's fans have been voting on www.bellsongroup.com to
determine the concert's final repertoire.
"I hope it can become an interactive carnival with those who always support
me," says Chan.
"So I will respect my fans' choice and sing what they most love to hear on
that night."
Chan reveals that his actress wife Hilary Tsui will be his costume designer,
and says there is no choreographed dance. Instead, he will add some
rock-and-roll flavor to his improvisational dancing.
"I just want to perform in a natural and spontaneous atmosphere," he adds. "I
will not assume any scenes in advance of the performance. I want to bring the
audience straight-to-the-heart surprises."
Taiwanese icon Mavis Fan will be the guest singer. Chan's good friend, the
famous Lam Chik (Albert Leung), a talented Hong Kong lyricist, will attend.
Born in 1974, Chan majored in architecture at the University of Kingston in
London before entering the entertainment business.
At the age of 21, when returning to Hong Kong for his summer vacation, Chan
entered a New Talent Singing Contest and unexpectedly won first prize. From then
on, his singing career took off.
Chan's movies and abums are very popular. A number of songs have been honored
as Most Popular Song of the Year and Chan himself was named Hong Kong's
Best-Selling Male Singer and Best Male Pop Singer.
"Unlike some singers with admirable appearance, Chan wins the hearts of
people with his superb singing skills," says fan Wang Feng.
"The emotion conveyed by his songs is so close to us and resonates in our
hearts."
Chan plays a variety of instruments, including piano, drums, guitar, violin,
saxophone and electronic organ.
Sometimes he is even a backup vocalist and a producer of his own albums. The
melodies he has written, such as "Anticlimax" and "Song of the Times," have been
widely welcomed.
