hustling Macao
(shanghai daily) Updated: 2006-11-17 09:06 He Zhongyi, a young artist based in Macao, depicts
the hustle and bustle of Macao in her first solo show in Shanghai at The Room
With a View gallery this month.
He, who grew up in Guangdong Province, received formal art education in
Macao. Since 1992, she has participated in exhibitions in Macao and in Hong
Kong. This time, she not only shows 12 pieces of work on the mainland but also
feels the difference between Shanghai and Macao.
Her paintings, almost abstract, deal with the busy work and rapid pace of
life in Macao.
"Life is a must in my work," says He.
She also writes with tools on canvas in calligraphy to express or comment on
some social development, including slogans and posters.
Although He has been in Shanghai for only a couple of days, she observes
everything carefully and draws her conclusions.
"Shanghainese value the quality of life much more than we in Macao," says He.
"Even when they eat a Spanish potato - it's enjoyment or leisure to the
Shanghainese."
She says if Shanghainese didn't care about the quality of life, they could
not be what they are now. She compared Shanghainese to Song Dynasty (960-1279
AD) people, who seemed to care much more about their ceramics than the threat
from northern minority groups.
"So I think Shanghainese pay much more attention to 'how to live' than 'how
to be'," says He.
