Barstools to perch on

Taniwha, since being disenfranchised by the destruction of Sanlitun
South Street, has found refuge in Tongli Studios.
Located just opposite its old contemporary Cheers on the second floor,
Taniwha is sparsely decorated, though its minimalist approach to decor could
easily be interpreted as laziness-polished corrugated iron is the most prominent
furnishing and the DJ booth looks to have been hastily constructed out of
industrial metal flooring.
The music itself is provided by DJ Delsin who promises the latest in
underground house. However, the lighting lends little to the atmosphere and is
provided by a single mirrored ball. And those looking for a seat have nothing
more than tall barstools to perch on. Said aesthetic inadequacies are partially
redeemed by barman Daniel. Formerly of the recently chai'd First Cafe, Daniel
hopes his tenure at Taniwha will help him emulate the success of former
colleagues George and Echo. His cocktails (RMB 30-45), while a little rough
around the edges, are competently mixed and perhaps the best you'll taste in
Tongli.
Taniwha Opening time: Daily 6pm-late.
Address: 2/F, Tongli Studios (across from Cheers Cafe), Sanlitun Beilu,
Chaoyang District
