Opened in April, the China flagship store at Plaza 66 is simplicity itself. The wall-mounted glass shelves, edged in gleaming nickel under warm yellow lights, offer a nicely understated platform for this season's wedges, leather belts and slouchy bags. As do the misty granite and Macassar ebony tables.

The women's and men's suits and separates also reflect a '90s minimalist style, available in a palette of nudes and pastels, in luxurious blends of cotton, silk, linen, wool and cashmere. Sander's use of high-end fabrics is a big part of the high-end price tag-asymmetric wrap-over skirts start at RMB 5,000; and strapless dresses tied with trails of ribbons are a cool RMB 9,200. For men, there are crisp cotton polo shirts in seafaring navy and white for RMB 3,000, and slim cut trousers at around RMB 5,000. Shoes and bags run from RMB 2,000-10,000.

The new Shanghai boutique is the brand's first on the Chinese mainland. "But we will also be looking for growth opportunities outside of Shanghai," says Ma. Adding that, "While Jil Sander is a global fashion brand, its understated styling can also serve as business attire. The luxurious fabrics and beautiful cut of the Jil Sander collections should certainly appeal to the discerning Chinese customer."
