Going underground

Ten years ago it was a nuclear shelter, today it is probably one of the most interesting bars in Beijing and makes Eje seem about as hard to find as the Forbidden City. Pretty Bird (chou niao, yes we know the English doesn't match the Chinese name) is situated under a housing complex up near Andingmen, but you'll probably have to call so they can guide you or your taxi driver in.

The on-street entrance, though re-built last year and a lot more conspicuous, provides little clue as to what awaits downstairs. As you walk in through a bright yellow entrance hall you take a sharp left into a darkened stairwell. At the bottom of the stairs you have to walk across a swinging wooden bridge, the type of which has most of its planks missing in movies.

Inside is a veritable rabbit warren of rooms - ten in all - each with its own special character. One resembles an opium den, while another is decked out totally in camouflage material, but if they don't take your fancy then there are plenty of sofas, large tables and swinging chairs to keep you amused. It would seem custom has suffered since the development of Houhai and Sanlitun, but don't let that put you off, this place is there for the taking to make your own, whether just the two of you or in a large group. It would also make the perfect venue for large parties.

Promoters take heed. Qingdao and Budweiser are 15 yuan a bottle, and spirits 30 - 45 yuan. A large selection of fusion food is also available. Seriously, check this place out.
