Despite Shanghainese cuisine's predilection for sweetness, good
desserts are surprisingly hard to come by. That is why Mon Reve, a patisserie
and chocolatier in Hongqiao that specializes in artfully made chocolates and
cakes, is particularly welcome.
Its best-seller, the New York Cheesecake (RMB 25), is light, smooth and rich,
while the Tiramisu (RMB 30) comes, somewhat untraditionally, encased in a
fragile white chocolate shell that only enhances its appeal. Do not leave
without the beautifully presented Hot Chocolate (RMB 25), which you mix up
yourself with a miniature milk chocolate cup and warm milk. Pastry chef James
Fricker, who set up Mon Reve with his partner after working at Las Vegas resorts
like Mandalay Bay, also fulfills special requests for cake, and chocolate and
sugar sculptures.
