(That's Beijing)
Updated: 2006-06-13 08:58

Take an American Tsinghua finance professor, a love of music and a venue in Wudaokou.

Throw in a stage, a bar, some couches and a second floor viewing balcony. Add alcohol, punk Johnny Cash covers, live jazz and rock, and you get D-22, the newest music venue to hit Beijing.

Situated two doors down from 13 Club, D-22 is an attempt to create a new live music hub in the capital. Their policy is to promote the experimental and new from both home and abroad ¨C basically anything that supports the scene. So every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night there'll be live music for an RMB 30 (RMB 20 for students) cover charge.

Tuesdays will be a film night, and there are plans to show shorts before each music performance. The upstairs section is comfy and chilled out with a long balcony overlooking the stage. There's even a private room with its own viewing gallery. Downstairs is dominated by the stage, with plenty of tables and a small area that promises to turn into a mosh pit during shows. The drink menu is not extensive: bottles of Tsingtao are RMB 10, while spirits and mixers start at RMB 20.
