Service at The City Diner is hit or miss and can sometimes be slow and disorganized, but as with many good things in life, the result is worthwhile.

Aiming to eventually be open 24 hours (conveniently down the street from the Tongren Lu bars), The City Diner provides 125-plus selections that span sandwiches, breakfast, hash, burgers and burritos. It's the only place in Shanghai where you'll be able to get a crab and avocado omelet (RMB 45) at 4am or homemade mac and cheese for a mere RMB 25.

This reviewer's favorites include Dad's Steak Sandwich (RMB 65), a shrimp, avocado and bacon club (RMB 45) and the oozing Flourless Chocolate Cake (RMB 40). Once it smoothes out its wrinkles, The City Diner will no doubt become THE Shanghai late-night hot spot.
