Swensen's: for sugar lovers
(That's Shanghai )
Updated: 2006-05-24 11:03

Some restaurants should stick to what they do best. Take Swensen's, for instance, which is famous in its Singaporean homeland for huge ice cream sundaes with names like Gold Rush, Black Bart, and Topless 5. Unfortunately, the chain also offers a full family menu. Our black pepper seafood pasta (RMB 35) was overcooked, soggy and flaccid.

Mains aside, we can't fault the desserts. The Sizzling Banana Crumble (RMB 48) with caramelized banana slices, vanilla ice cream, and a dollop of butterscotch cream sauce, was simply fantastic. So was the Sticky Chewy Chocolate (RMB 50); delicious ice cream showered with a fountain of hot fudge. With many more such sweet-tooth delights to choose from, you may have to keep an eye on your sugar level. But don't worry about your waistline; go ahead, give yourself a treat.
