The only word I can find in the dictionary that truly describes Bar
Rouge is "swanky." Here in Shanghai, Bar Rouge makes swank accessible to the
"little people." Regardless of your preferred scene, this is the place to see
and to be seen!
Located on the Bund, Bar Rouge is known for its incredible patio offering
spectacular views across the river to Pudong and beyond. In the summer, the
light nights and cool breeze make this the social hangout de jour and in the
winter, fur coats are donned and the cold is braved, as visitors and regulars
alike seek out the magnificent view.
Obviously from the name, Bar Rouge is Parisian in style, though its approach
is definitely Moulin Rouge-esque offering an almost clandestine sexuality to the
space. The lighting is award-worthy and the seating, sprawled out across the
venue and around the bar, is luxurious, though a hefty minimum spend poses
problems for the average patron.
The weekend unfortunately attracts a lot of poseurs so if you are looking for
something a little more genuine, it may be best to visit during the week-the
style is the same, as is the view, but the clientele is a little more authentic.
The weekend also comes with a cover charge of 50 yuan (US$6) on the door.
Regardless of what day of the week you visit, dress code should be adhered to
and Bar Rouge demands nothing less than stylish. If in doubt, do as the Romans
do, and go for Paris Chic.
The drinks are as lavish as the venue itself and the Bar Rouge Martini
(US$12) comes with a performance from the bar staff! Every time it is ordered,
the bar staff light up the bar and perform a routine, throwing bottles into the
air as they make the drinks.
Classy and elegant, Bar Rouge is a "must do" for every guest in Shanghai but,
as is often the case, it is not for regular visitations; to be truly enjoyed
this is a once in a while or a "once in a lifetime" location.
