DirectorLi Liuyiof the Beijing People's Art Theater will present his first ballet production The Peony Pavilion. The famous love story written by Ming Dynasty playwright Tang Xianzu, has mostly been staged as Chinese operas. The ballet version focuses on the exploration of the inner world of the characters through body language.

Two concerts are being held to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Haydn (1732-1809). Led by conductorEnoch zu Guttenberg, the KlangVerwaltung Orchestra and Chorus will present Haydn's choral works The Seasons and Creation.

The Seasons extols pastoral life, while Creation celebrates God's creation of the world.

The Peony Pavilion, the classicKunqu Opera, is on at the Imperial Granary, a perfect venue for such a show. The Imperial Granary was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty, 600 years ago, at exactly the same time the Kunqu Opera was written.

TheChinese Acrobatics Grouphas toured more than 80 countries and helped foster friendships with them. Its performance includes traditional acrobatics, a circus show, magic and old Beijing folk plays. The show blends music, dance, local opera and martial arts.

Exhibitions

Two solo exhibitions are running at the Today Art Museum. Chinese-born artistChen Wanshanpresents more than 50 of his latest oil paintings.Li Shuji, a veteran painter from Liaoning province, is acclaimed for his vivid and realistic depictions of ordinary Chinese.

British photographerMartin Parrhas been engaged in this field for 35 years. The works on display include Common Sense, The Last Resort, Small World, Luxury and Bored Couples. He focuses mostly on items of daily consumption and environmental concerns.
