A sum of 3 million yuan ($440,000) has been given to Yingjing county in western Sichuan province to help restore Kaishan Buddhist Monastery, a 560-year-old structure damaged severely in last year's earthquake. The donation was made at a ceremony held on Monday at the China Charity Federation in Beijing.

The money was raised by BOSSsunwen Clothing Co Ltd, a garment manufacturer based in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. The company held a charity auction of ink paintings and calligraphic works by veteran artists such as Shen Peng, Feng Qiyong, Su Shishu and Tang Shuangning, among its staff.

The monastery repair work will begin later this month and is expected to be completed next March, says Yingjing county chief Yang Piqiao.

Last May's quake destroyed many heritage sites and they are in dire need of funds for repairs, says Zhao Chuanrong, a cultural heritage expert from Sichuan.
