Shanghai guide: Fun under the sun

Life's a Beach: Bihai Jinsha

Bihai Jinsha (blue sea, gold sand) in Fengxian district is one of the few high-quality beaches in Shanghai, thanks to white sand specially shipped from Hainan province and a filtration system designed to keep the water clear.

Next week an international animation carnival will open featuring "cosplay" (i.e. costume fantasy) shows, beauty contests, performances by stars from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and stage operas shown on a white shell-shaped stage next to the sea.

An area of more than 30,000 square meters has been set aside for the festival, including a rain forest theme park, a square for video gamers, an open-air animation exhibition hall and a gourmet food street which will host a Taiwanese food fair.

Every day six lucky tourists will be drawn to win prizes including an 80,000-yuan sedan and round-trip air tickets to Malaysia.
