It is already 5 pm, but the gymnasium at Peking University's Wanliu Apartment is still busy.

Spreading the cheer

Although three hours of training have passed and the girls' clothes are soaking wet with sweat, no one wants to leave, for they know one more minute's practice will make their upcoming performance that bit better.

The girls belong to the Dianfeng dance team. They have been invited by the China Men's Basketball team to be their exclusive cheerleaders for the team's ongoing eight warm-up matches with Australia and Lithuania for the Asian championship that began yesterday and will continue until Aug 1.

"We have been longing for this moment," Park Bo Yoen, the team's South Korean coach, says excitedly. "This is the first time the China Men's Basketball team will have their own cheerleaders during international competitions.

"We may be opening a new page in the history of China's cheerleaders."

To put up a good show, Park Bo Yoen and her teammates choreographed more than 10 different dances and sourced the accompanying costumes and props.

Since a good cheerleading team should also be able to interact with the spectators, the girls have been paying much attention to that aspect, too.

Barking commands such as "Turn right and stretch out your arms at once!", "The second group of actions should become quicker, bolder and more powerful!", "Pay more attention to your right leg!", the easy-going coach seems like another person when she gets down to training.
