July 28, 1950: A large-scale three-self patriotic movement (self-governing, self-support and self-propagation) begins

A group of celebrities led by representatives of the National Council of the Chinese Young People's Christian Association released a declaration calling on Christians to cut off their links with Imperialist powers to realize the principles of self-governing, self-support and self-propagation of Chinese churches, and to love both China and Christianity.

July 28, 1976: A deadly magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurs in Tangshan in Hebei province which is believed to be produce the largest death toll of any earthquake of the 20th century

July 28, 2003: A national working conference on SARS prevention and control is held in Beijing
